Tenacity Is Developed Through Setting the Correct Type of Goals
Setting goals is a great way to improve your organization. However, setting goals for the benefit of others can help you grow as an individual and leader in ways that are more meaningful than ever before.
Let’s start with talking about the type of goals I believe you should be setting.
Here is what I have found with goals. When I set goals that are based on my own personal gain. Whether it be for personal finances, growth of the company, etc, I tend not to have that same amount of drive or “Tenacity” to see them through. There is a major reason why this is the case. And to begin this idea let's read scripture from Galatians:
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 ESV
Basically, your goals should not just be focused on personal gain but on doing good. That’s a statement of servanthood. How do you do good? The main way is by serving others and helping others see success. So It’s by setting goals that help others that you then grow. Let’s break this down a little more.
Setting goals and deadlines for yourself, and sticking with them even when things become difficult will help you achieve your goals as well as teach you how to overcome future obstacles. But your goals should not just be focused on you and self-gain. It’s by setting goals that help others that you then grow and when the challenges and obstacles come and you need to apply tenacity to see them through there is a greater reason attached to hitting that goal than just you.
Setting goals like this will help you to be persistent in achieving your goal.
4 Tips To Help You Set Goals To The Benefit of Others
(Setting goals like this will help you develop the leadership trait of “Tenacity”.)
1. Keep trying even when it seems impossible
Think about what obstacles are getting in your way and find ways around them. This will not only help you achieve your goals but also teach you how to overcome future challenges as well.
Overcoming obstacles reminds me of the story of Joseph in the bible. The obstacles that he faced and the struggles. But in the end, he made this statement to his brother:
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” Genesis 50:20 ESV
Obstacles in our lives are sometimes needed to ready us and prepare us for something.
2. Take time to reflect and learn from your mistakes so you don't make them again
It's important to continue reflecting on the past because then you won't make the same mistake twice. When we reflect on our mistakes we can learn from them and we learn what not to do so we know how to not repeat them in the future. It's important to take time for reflection and don't be too hard on yourself because everyone makes mistakes.
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2 ESV
3. Accept that life is full of ups and downs, but it's important to keep going no matter what the circumstance
It's important to keep going even when something unfortunate happens. For example, let's say that I just received a bad grade on an exam that I studied really hard for. Even though I am disappointed with my performance, it's important to keep persisting until the end. If I stop studying because of this one bad grade, then I won't be able to achieve my goal which is getting at least a B on the exam. It's important to remember why you started your goal in the first place and not give up because of one obstacle.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” Matthew 6:25-30
4. It's okay to ask for help or let people know how you feel; sometimes we need a little extra support!
It's important to remember why you started your goal in the first place and to not give up because of any struggle. If you experience a struggle or get to that point where it seems difficult or too hard, then it's okay to ask for help. It's also important to let people know how you're feeling so they can provide support.
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14
